Powering a greener future for foundries

Written by Kalle Härkki | Jun 11, 2024 5:00:00 AM

European foundries are seeking new and innovative technologies and implementing strategies to reduce their environmental footprint, improve efficiency, and contribute to a greener and more sustainable future. Foundries are investing in energy-efficient equipment, optimizing material use, and seeking ways to reduce emissions.

As part of their ambitious targets to move to a greener foundry industry, the foundries are also looking for new and innovative technological solutions for recycling and regenerating sand at the foundries. Sand usage at the foundries requires a lot of work and involves significant costs. The excavation and transportation of virgin sand and the landfilling of used sand are a major issue when efficient resource use and emission reduction should be prioritized.

Introduction of an innovative electric sand reclaimer by Resand

Resand has developed a Sand As A Service (SAAS) solution to meet the growing need for the regeneration of used sand in foundries. The solution is cost and resource saving sand regeneration in foundries through a service solution provided by a specialized supplier. Further responding to the market needs, Resand has now introduced an electric sand reclaimer on the European market. The reclaimer unit is a modular system that is quick and customer-friendly for the foundry to install and commission. With an electrically heated drive, the sand reclaimer is also easy to connect to the foundry’s mains.

Sand-related CO2 emissions can be reduced significantly

With Resand’s solution, clean sand is always available at the foundry. Using an electrically powered reclaimer, sand-related CO2 emissions from the use of new sand and associated transportation can be significantly reduced. When using renewable energy, the reclaimer's direct greenhouse gas emissions, i.e. Scope 1 emissions, remain low.

First service agreement in place

The first SAAS agreement for the new electric reclaimer was signed in April with a Finnish foundry. The agreement includes Resand’s innovative and environmentally friendly electrically powered reclaimer with which the customer foundry will start electric sand regeneration at its production facilities. After recovery, the sand can be used again and again in foundry processes, effectively reducing the need for virgin sand.

A promising future for the electric sand reclaimer

Resand’s business has always been guided by innovation and an understanding of customer needs. We are very proud of our first service agreement for an electric sand reclaimer, and we see a promising future for it, as the foundry industry both in Finland and elsewhere in Europe has been hoping for an electrically powered modular sand reclaimer solution. The challenge of regenerating used sand is global. We intend to be everywhere where there are foundries.

Resand Ltd in brief

Sand suitable for industrial use is becoming scarce. However, the extraction of virgin sand can be reduced, and the resulting loss of biodiversity is slowed down by regenerating and reusing sand. Resand Ltd is a Finnish technology company specializing in foundry sand regeneration, offering its customers clean sand as a service. The Resand® solution enables almost 100% recycling of foundry sand and reduces CO2 emissions from sand use and transport by up to 80%.

Resand Ltd is headquartered in Nuutajärvi, Finland, and has staff in several European countries. The company aims to achieve strong growth in the European foundry market and to expand its business outside Europe.

The Resand® brings a solution to the global challenge by recycling sand - again and again and again.
