Resand’s new deployment with ExOne brings sand reclamation to 3D printing

Resand Ltd, a Finnish technology company specializing in environmentally friendly foundry sand reclamation and recycling, has signed a Sand as a Service (SaaS) agreement with ExOne, a leading provider of industrial 3D printing systems for sandcasting.

ExOne will deploy a Resand electric reclaimer for sand 3D printing at its German headquarters in Gersthofen with the SaaS business model. With Resand’s solution, 3D-printed sand can be thermal-mechanically reclaimed, including a dedicated module for high-value 3D-printing specialty sand. The technology recovers up to 98% of used sand for reuse in production, reducing the need for virgin sand and significantly decreasing landfill waste. The fully electric operation reduces CO₂ emissions by 50–80% compared to the use of virgin sand.

ExOne is a leading provider of industrial 3D printing systems with operations in the USA, Germany, Japan, China, and India. Established in 1995, ExOne specializes in binder-jet 3D printing for sandcasting, using high-value specialty sand (e.g. ceramic media) for printing molds and cores.

For Resand, the agreement marks an important step in its intended expansion into the field of 3D printing, building on its established expertise in sand reclamation. The company sees further growth potential in the coming years, which is supported by rising specialty sand prices, higher landfill costs, and increasing ESG requirements.

We are excited to roll out Resand’s electric sand reclamation system at our facility, with the prospect of meaningful cost savings and strong environmental benefits. The service-based model, delivered through a monthly fee rather than an equipment purchase, requires only limited capital investment and makes this an attractive partnership for us,” says Eric Bader, CEO of ExOne.

“We are delighted to partner with ExOne, enabling our sand reclamation solution to be integrated into their special sand 3D printing processes. This collaboration opens an exciting area for our technology and creates new growth opportunities in 3D printing and sand reclamation in the years ahead,” says Mikko Immonen, CEO of Resand Ltd.
