Resand Ltd, a Finnish technology company specializing in foundry sand regeneration, has won the main prize of the AINO Quality Deed of the Year competition for its sand regeneration solution, which enables the foundry industry to switch to a closed sand cycle. The competition, organized by Excellence Finland, awarded Finnish acts of development, quality, and innovation. The jury, comprising a diverse group of experts from the business and public sectors, underscored the significance of Resand's innovation in addressing a global challenge – it represents a responsible act that safeguards biodiversity and enhances the future competitiveness of Finnish industry.
Sand – a critical but dwindling resource
Sand is the second most used natural resource in the world after water. Construction, industry, and infrastructure consume about 50 billion tons of natural sand every year, which equals about 18 kilograms per person per day. At the same time, vast amounts of waste sand are generated, most of which ends up in landfills. Sand suitable for industrial use is running out, and the extraction of virgin sand causes significant biodiversity loss.
With the help of Resand's innovative technology, the used foundry sand is revived and returned to circulation. This enables almost 100% sand recycling, reducing sand-related CO2 emissions by up to 80%.
Quality, responsibility, and impact
Excellence Finland is Finland's largest network of quality and development experts. Its goal is a successful Finland with competitiveness built on a sustainable foundation. The AINO Quality Deed of the Year Award is a recognition of an organization or team that has done a significant and impactful deed to promote quality and responsibility. Resand's award-winning innovation was evaluated based on novelty value, usability, learning, customer orientation, and profitability. The sand regeneration solution not only improves the environmental impact of the foundry industry but also serves as an example of how Finnish technology can respond to global challenges.
"We are really proud that our Resand® sand regeneration solution received the AINO Quality Deed of the Year Award. We want to offer the industry a sustainable alternative in a situation where the world's sand reserves are running out. We will continue to work for the environment and quality, together with our customers and partners," says Mikko Immonen, CEO of Resand Ltd.
