Resand Oy, a specialist in environmentally friendly sand regeneration technology, has signed a service agreement with the iron casting supplier Suomivalimo, a company based in Iisalmi, Finland. Under the agreement, Resand will recycle and regenerate the waste sand from Suomivalimo’s casting process for reuse. In cooperation with Resand, the recycling rate of Suomivalimo's sand usage will increase significantly and the amount of waste sand will be reduced.

Suomivalimo, which uses furan resin technology, supplies its customers with cast iron components weighing between 200 and 6,000 kg, both in series production and as individual items. During its more than 100-year history, Suomivalimo has been a reliable and flexible partner for its domestic and Nordic mechanical engineering industry customers.

“As a trusted and local partner, we want to offer our customers even higher quality products in a more environmentally friendly way. We are pleased that Resand offers sand regenerating and recycling as a service. The agreement we have signed will improve the availability of sand, increase our recycling rate, and reduce sand transport," comments Olli Karhunen, Managing Director of Suomivalimo Oy.

Suomivalimo’s moulds and kernels are made from quartz sand, which is used in the process at a rate of approximately 3,000 tons per year. The virgin quartz sand used by the foundry is transported by ship to Finland from Belgium. After processing and drying, the sand is delivered by truck to the Iisalmi foundry.

ResandTM Sand As A Service (SAAS) solution offers sustainable savings for foundries compared to the current practice in the foundry industry. Savings are achieved through buying less virgin sand, disposing of less used sand, and reducing transport and energy costs. The regeneration solution can reduce CO2 emissions from sand use and transport by up to 80%. As the regeneration and recycling of used sand is offered as a service, it also reduces the capital tied up in foundry operations.

"At Resand, we are proud to contribute to the green transition of the foundry industry with our patented technology and innovative service. Thanks to the agreement with Suomivalimo, many domestic foundries are now well advanced in the environmentally friendly treatment of sand. Outside Finland, the foundry industry is also looking for new sustainable solutions, as evidenced by our previous agreements with the global market leader Siempelkamp and 3D printing solutions provider voxeljet. I thank Suomivalimo for choosing our sand regeneration solution," says Kalle Härkki, CEO of Resand.

Resand Oy in brief

Sand suitable for industrial use is becoming scarce. However, the extraction of virgin sand can be reduced, and the resulting loss of biodiversity slowed down by regenerating and reusing sand. Resand Oy is a Finnish technology company specializing in foundry sand regeneration, offering its customers clean sand as a service. The ResandTMsolution enables almost 100% recycling of foundry sand and reduces CO2 emissions from sand use and transport by up to 80%.

Resand Oy is headquartered in Nuutajärvi, Finland, and has staff in several European countries. The company aims to achieve strong growth in the European foundry market and to expand its business outside Europe.

The ResandTM brings a solution to the global challenge by recycling sand - again and again and again.
